Title: Lola Carlyle's 12-Step Romance
Release Date: 05/05/15

Summary from Goodreads

Lola Carlyle is lonely, out of sorts, and in for a boring summer. So when her best friend, Sydney, calls to rave about her stay at a posh Malibu rehab and reveals that the love of Lola’s life, Wade Miller, is being admitted, she knows what she has to do. Never mind that her worst addiction is decaf cappuccino; Lola is going to rehab.

Lola arrives at Sunrise Rehab intent solely on finding Wade, saving him from himself, and—naturally—making him fall in love with her…only to discover she’s actually expected to be an addict. And get treatment. And talk about her issues with her parents, and with herself. Plus she has insane roommates, and an irritatingly attractive mentor, Adam, who’s determined to thwart her at every turn.

Oh, and Sydney? She’s gone.

Turns out, once her pride, her defenses, and her best friend are stripped away, Lola realizes she’s actually got a lot to overcome…if she can open her heart long enough to let it happen.

ARC Review

The story

Lola Carlyle has everything she ever wanted. Designer clothes, famous parents, credit cards at her beck and call but still she's bored, so bored that she decides to fake being an alcoholic in order to go to this fancy rehabilitation center called Sunrise where most of the patients are Hollywood celebrities. One of them is Wade Miller, the super hot and talented actor that Lola met when he started his career and her long time crush.

So she kills two birds with one stone. She goes there to meet and make Wade fall in love with her and she also plans on spending her summer doing yoga, enjoying private massages, swimming and getting a tan. Plus, her best friend Sydney will be there so she'll have the best company she could think of.

But when on her first day she finds out that Sydney's parents took her back home, Lola realizes that's going to be one hell of a summer faking to be addictive to something she's not and having to deal with issues she never thought she had....

The characters

Everyone thinks Lola is one more spoiled girl with famous parents but the truth is that she's more fragile than she even knows herself. What started as a joke turned out to be a big emotional journey where she had to face the music and admit that she's a troubled teen trying to hide behind her attitide. She's treats everyone like she owns them or she manipulates them because that's her personal shield against the problems she has to deal with.

Everyone at Sunrise rehabilitation center has a mentor and Lola's is Adam, a twenty year old college student who wants to help teenagers speak up about their addictions and heal emotionally and physically. According to Lola, he's a pain in the butt but can you blame him? He has to deal with Lola and her attitude every single day. But annoying Adam can also be attractive and totally understanding Adam...

As mentioned above, Lola's reason for going to Sunrise in the first place was to win the heart of Wade Miller. When he first started his career, he was a kind and sweet kid but the world of show business and Hollywood messed him up pretty bad.

Lola's roomates are Talia and Jade. They both have their own issues but they also both help Lola come to terms with her very own issues. Sometimes they can be serious, sometimes funny and other times creepy but the're an essential part to Lola's 12 step program towards recovery.

One thing most YA novels don't include is the parents. I'm glad I read about Lola's parents, their relationship with her, their attitude towards their own daughter and throughout the story the enormous impact they had on Lola.

The verdict

Lola Carlyle's 12-Step Romance has been added to my Favourite Books list and I recommend it to anyone who wants to begin their summer reading a novel about finding yourself, coming to terms with who you really are and who you want to be and the even longer path to forgiving and reinventing yourself.
